Harmonic Drift
Harmonic Drift was born from the quiet moments of reflection I find in nature. This piece speaks to the delicate balance between movement and stillness—a harmony that I’ve come to rely on in my own life. The swirling motion in the painting reflects the drift of life itself, where we’re often carried along by unseen currents, sometimes gently, sometimes with force, yet always moving forward, even when it feels like we’re standing still.
At the heart of this piece are plumerias that my husband and I grew together. These flowers hold a special place in my heart, connecting me not only to my Hawaiian roots but also to the importance of nurturing life and relationships. Plumerias symbolize new beginnings and beauty, and in this piece, they represent the quiet resilience that we carry with us, even during life’s transitions. They’re embedded alongside crystal geodes, which I chose for their ability to hold and reflect light, much like the way we find our own light through the challenges we face.
The organic flow of this painting mirrors my own journey—of learning to trust in the process of life, in its ebbs and flows, and in the spaces where peace and clarity reside. The interplay of textures, from the smoothness of resin to the roughness of the plaster and crystals, is intentional. It mimics the contrast of life’s rough edges and the serenity we seek within them. As I worked on Harmonic Drift, I found myself in a state of deep reflection, feeling the rhythm of my own emotions—sometimes turbulent, other times calm—and channeling that into the swirling motion of the piece.
This painting is a representation of that internal shift—from chaos to calm, from uncertainty to peace. It’s about finding harmony in the places where we least expect it and embracing the drift, trusting that it will lead us where we need to be.
I hope that Harmonic Drift offers a sense of peace and movement to whoever it belongs to, just as creating it brought me a sense of clarity. I believe that art, like life, is about balance—finding stillness in the motion and learning to float along with life’s currents rather than fight against them. This piece is a reminder that even in the drift, there is harmony waiting to be found.
